Cardiff & South Wales Huntington's disease Service

Background
The aim of the Huntington's disease service is to provide information about the disease, genetic counselling and test, and ongoing clinical care and support to HD patients and their families in South Wales.

The service is actively involved in research.  A number of these research activities are in partnership with UK and European Huntington's disease networks.


Genetic Counselling Service 
The All Wales Medical Genetics Service (AWMGS) provides presymptomatic genetic counselling, testing and support for at-risk individuals and families. This service is is based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Tel: (029) 2074 2577.

Clinics at the Cardiff Huntington's disease Centre
Professor Rosser's Presymptomatic and Management clinics are held on Wednesdays at the Hadyn Ellis Building, Cardiff University.  

Predictive test follow-up clinic
Individuals who are gene positive, but who are not yet showing symptoms of HD are invited once a year to a follow-up clinic. Here we can offer support, information and medical check ups.

HD Management Clinic
This clinic provides a service for patients with symptoms of HD, their families and carers. Here we can provide advice on the treatment and management of symptoms, access to benefits, respite and specialist care and also information about participation in research.

Research Activities

The Centre is currently recruiting for the ENROLL-HD observational study, as well as a number of other studies.  More details can be found at the Cardiff Huntington's disease Centre website.


Cardiff HD Physiotherapy Group - Promoting exercise and activity in Huntington's disaese through research and collaboration.


The Brain Repair Group (BRG): Led by Profs Steve Dunnett and Anne Rosser at Cardiff University, the BRG focuses on research into neurodegeneration, repair and neuroprotection in disease models of Huntington’s and Parkinson’s.

Referrals and Appointments
Patients and relatives are referred to Professor Anne Rosser's HD clinic by GPs, Hospital Consultants or AWMGS.  Self-referrals can also be made directly if you would prefer not to involve your GP initially.
